Defunct metal detector at Konark Sun temple

Konark: The metal detector installed at the main entrance of Sun Temple here is lying defunct putting the security of the world heritage site at risk. As the tourism season is on, thousands of tourists from across the country and abroad visit the 13th century temple every day. However, the metal detector has been dysfunctional. As a result luggage, cameras and other items carried by visitors are going unchecked. In the absence of the metal detector, the ASI authorities and officials concerned have not taken any alternative measure to maintain the security check at the main gate. It has exposed the alleged callousness of the authorities, sources said. Meanwhile, the intellectuals have expressed concern over the defunct metal detector and engaging a private security agency to maintain the security at the temple site. ASI officer Nirmal Mohapatra said the issue would be resolved soon.
