Denied hospital admission, woman delivers in auto

Talcher: A pregnant woman of Ward No10 under Talcher NAC gave birth to a baby girl in an auto late Tuesday night, while returning home from a local hospital as she was not attended.

According to sources, one Tarjan Behera rushed his wife Barsha (19) in an auto to the nearest Talcher Divisional Hospital when she started having labour pains. But the doctor on duty had advised Tarjan to take her to any hospital in Angul or a nursing home. Out of compulsion, Tarzan called 108 and 102 ambulance service, keeping the emergency in mind. As ill fate would have it, he could not avail any ambulance service.

Helpless, he decided to take his wife to Angul Headquarters Hospital by the same auto and near Sharma Chhak, on the way, Barsha delivered the baby girl. Again, she was taken to the Talcher Divisional Hospital, where she was refused of any post-delivery care.

On being informed, a local social activist, Purna Behera, and some others rushed to the hospital and chided the doctor and nurses for such inhuman act. Then the newborn was given post-delivery care.

Reacting to this, Hospital Manager Sanjay Malua said, “One patient came here and she was referred to Angul hospital. However, the SDMO Ashok Kumar Pradhan could not be contacted for his reaction.

Sadly, this incident took place at a time when the state government has introduced many schemes for women, especially pregnant women. Obviously, these welfare plans are unable to cater to the needs of women, at times.
