Angul: In a shocking incident, a person allegedly thrashed his mother to death at Ugi village near Jarpada in this district Tuesday evening after she refused to give him money for buying liquor.
The deceased was identified as Surekha Mahar (70), mother of the accused Ranjan Mahar.
According to police sources, Ranjan was a habitual drunkard and often created nuisance in the family. On the fateful night, he came home and asked Surekha for her old-age pension money that she had received a day back to buy liquor.
An altercation broke out between the mother-son duo after she declined to give money. In a fit of rage, Ranjan thrashed his mother mercilessly, leading to her death on the spot.
Ranjan later took the body to a nearby crematorium for her final rites.
However, police, on being informed, reached the spot and seized the charred remains of the body.
Though Ranjan managed to escape from the spot, he was apprehended Wednesday morning. Police have started investigation into the incident after registering a murder case.
