Rayagada, May 6: Even as doctors in the hospitals across the state have been in news for all the wrong reasons, Dr Prafulla Kumar Padhi, a doctor here in the district headquarters hospital (DHH) has set a precedent Tuesday by donating his blood to save the life of a poor delivery patient.
The act of Dr Padhi, who is also a patient of hypertension, has been widely appreciated. According to reports, Hikka Kudungi, wife of Hikka Dasena of Uttimunda village under Kalyansinghpur block was admitted to the DHH Monday after she experienced labour pain. She was operated upon late night as her condition started worsening. Suddenly, need of four units of blood arose after the operation was over. Dr Padhi was on duty at that time. Dasena contacted the blood bank officials of the hospital to meet the requirement but failed. The family members were in a state of panic as the blood bank was empty for the last couple of days. Even the doctors, staff nurses and ANMs were clueless about the situation.
Meanwhile, Dr Padhi swung into action to save the life of the patient. He first talked to the relatives of some of the other patients and managed three units of blood. Left with no option, Padhi himself came forward to donate another unit of blood to meet the requirement. The whole hospital plunged into jubilation as the news spread.
The incident made Padhi, a hero of sort as he himself was suffering from high blood pressure. He didn’t sleep whole night to ensure a safe motherhood. However, he fell down Tuesday at the hospital while on duty due to hypertension. Dr Padhi dared to donate his blood to save the life of a poor woman even as a person having hypertension should not make such attempt, hospital staffers said. Meanwhile, Dr Padhi has earned a good name for himself among the patients and their relatives for treating them like his kin.
“I get immense pleasure when a patient gets cured with my care,” Dr Padhi said. When contacted Chief district medical officer (CDMO) Dr Ananda Padhi said, “The effort of Dr Padhi is extremely commendable. We are trying to collect more blood by organizing blood donation camps at various places.”
