BHUBANESWAR: A candle making workshop was organised by Aikiyam in Old Town here Sunday. Experienced candle maker Meena Basu from Kolkata conducted the workshop.
Skilled in integrating art, handicraft and education, Meena Basu strives to motivate students through her artistic pursuit. Differently-abled children were engaged in making aromatic, floating, blocks, spherical and hand carved candles at the event.
Besides differently-abled students, young and old women who wished to make candles also participated at the event. Bijaylaxmi Kar, a member of Rotary Club, came to learn the craft so that she could teach the skill to a transgender group in January, 2018.
An autistic child Ree participated in the event along with his mother. Both of them tried their hands in making a variety of candles. Ree was helped by his mother to make candles based on lotus petals. Coconut shells were used in this endeavor. On a brief interaction with Orissa Post, Basu said, “Creativity knows no limits. This is a wonderful opportunity for anyone who is interested in making candles.”
Owner of Aikyam studio Vinita Mitra Shibori said, “Throughout the year, Aikyam conducts yoga, dance, meditation, talks, private screening of films and discussions to list a few. However, this time we thought of putting up such a beautiful workshop to enhance the inner urge of a potential artist.”
Anshuman, a participant of the workshop, said, “I will cherish the experience forever. I always wished to be engaged in making candles. I thank Aikyam for providing me with the opportunity.”
