Bhubaneswar: Orissa hockey star Dipsan Tirkey has been chosen for the Ekalabya Award, one of the most prestigious sports awards of the state, for 2017. The decision was taken unanimously, by the award committee comprising jury members of different walks of life at a meeting here, Sunday.
The Team India defender will also receive a cash award of Rs 5,00,000 and a citation at the awards function, the date of which will be announced soon
Tirkey has been in the limelight for past couple of years with some wonderful performances in various national and international events. He was a member of the Indian team that emerged Champion in the VIIth Junior Men’s Asia Cup Hockey Tournament in Malayasia. He was also the vice-captain of the Indian team that won the Junior Men’s Hockey World Cup at Lucknow the past year.
Besides Dipsan, sprint ace Amiya Mallick and Indian women’s hockey team member and Olympian Deep Grace Ekka will be felicitated on this auspicious occasion and will receive a cash prize of Rs. 50,000 each along with citations.
Selection camp
The Orissa Cricket Association will organise a trial-cum-selection camp for the U-16 cricketers in Cuttack, starting September 20. The district bodies have been instructed to send top three players of their district for the camp while Bhubaneswar and Cuttack were instructed for six players each. Moreover, they are also requested to intimate the players those represented the previous year state U-16 team and eligible to play this year too.
