Cuttack, Jan 7: In a landmark achievement, plastic surgeons replanted a severed hand on a patient without using microscope at SCB Medical College and Hospital, Wednesday.
According to sources, Jambubati Biswal (35) of Bhandaripokhari in Bhadrak district, was winnowing chaff from paddy in a machine in the morning when one of her hands got stuck in the machine. A profusely bleeding Jambu was rushed to Jajpur district headquarters hospital where doctors referred her to SCB. Doctors at SCB advised her to undergo an operation to reconstruct her hand which was severed at wrist.
A six-member team comprising Prithwiraj Singh, Debes Rout, Sanjay Giri, Asish Patnaik, Prasant Bal and Harekrushna Ray led by surgery department head Arun Choudhury started reconstructing the severed hand at 12pm. The operation continued for six hours. A few nerves and two key wires attached to tissues had been damaged. The severed hand received blood circulation at 4pm, said Choudhury adding that doctors could have taken three hours instead of six hours to operate upon the hand had the government provided operating microscope to the Plastic surgery department.
