Jeypore: In a rare gesture from a government servant, a specialist doctor at the Jeypore sub-divisional hospital in Koraput district donated a unit blood to save a poor woman patient suffering from acute shortage of haemoglobin. With this, Dr Bhupati Bhusan Jena is now the talk of the town.
According to sources, Mani Golari (27), wife of Madan Golari of Doraguda village under Boipariguda block, was admitted to the sub-divisional hospital the other day. Dr. Jena, who was treating the patient, asked her husband to arrange three units of blood. Madan scouted around but could arrange only one unit of blood. He returned to Dr. Jena and expressed his inability to fetch more blood.
“No problem, don’t worry,” consoled Dr Jena, and he himself opted to donate blood, and saved the patient’s life. The woman’s condition improved after the blood transfusion. “By his yeoman act, the doctor has set a great example for others in the medical profession to follow,” some locals said as they applauded Jena for his good deed.
“When the patient was admitted to the hospital, her haemoglobin level was only 2.2. She required three units of blood on an emergency basis. Her husband could only arrange one unit. The need of the moment was to save a patient. I donated my blood without any second-thought,” Dr. Jena said, adding that the patient was well now.
“It was being very kind of the doctor to help a poor woman in such a critical time. I can never forget the good deed of Jena doctor. He donated blood to save my wife, I am deeply indebted to him,” said Madan.
Earlier in March, a similar action by a doctor was reported from Kandhamal district. Dr Yajnadutta Rath turned out to be ‘god in human form’ for a patient. He had trekked a hill and crossed the river to treat a woman in labour pain on her way to the hospital, caught as she was in the forests under Tumudibandha block of the tribal district.
Another doctor Omkar Hota also hit headlines in November last for standing up to the call of his duty. He carried a tribal woman, who was bleeding after delivery, on his shoulders for 10km to a Public Health Centre (PHC) in Paplur of Malkangiri district.
