Baleshwar: Forest officials recovered the carcass of a male dolphin from Talapada beach under Remuna block in Baleshwar district Wednesday, after fishermen spotted it near the shore, officials said.
The fishermen noticed the carcass at about 9am and informed the Talakurunia Forest Beat House by phone. Forester Manju Lata Pradhan and forest personnel Jyotshna Dutta reached the spot and recovered the carcass.
The dolphin, measuring about 4.5 feet in length, was transported in a goods auto-rickshaw to the veterinary centre at Gopalpur, where a post-mortem examination was conducted.
Forest officials said the dolphin may have died after colliding with a fishing boat or trawler while entering the sea from the Bhitar Kanika side.
Its carcass was subsequently carried by sea currents and washed ashore at Talapada, they said.
A crowd gathered on the beach after the carcass was found. It was not the first such incident in the area.
Forest officials recovered a 7-foot-long dolphin carcass from the sandy beach near the Jamuka estuary at Talapada Oc tober 3 last year.
The carcass was later buried in a pit on the premises of the Kurunia Beat House.
