Bhubaneswar: Abhishek Mohapatra of Orissa emerged champion in the under-14 boys’ singles and doubles events of the AITA CS U-14 tennis tournament which concluded Friday in Kolkata.
The student of Farhan Ali Tennis Academy started his giant-killing run in the singles by toppling second seed and compatriot Pratyush Mohanty 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 in the quarterfinals. Abhishek held his nerve in crucial stages of the third set to emerge victorious in this contest and enter the semifinals.
In the semifinal encounter Abhishek defeated Kanav Goel 6-2, 6-2 and in the final he produced another tremendous performance to stun top seed Aman Wasim of West Bengal 6-1, 6-2. The local player had no answer to Abhishek’s superior court-craft and powerful ground strokes.
In the boys’ under-14 doubles final, Abhishek partnering academy mate D Arsyan Swamy emerged winners. In the final they defeated the local Kolkata combo of Arnab Majumdar and W O’Brien 6-1, 6-2 in a one-sided encounter.
One must praise Abhishek’s stamina as he played all the matches Friday, the last day of the tournament.
