DOWRY TORTURE: Man raises question over wife’s gender

Nayagarh: In a novel form of dowry torture in Dimirijhari village of the district, a man claimed his wife whom he married only four days ago is a male.

Barsharani Nayak (19) alias Pinky had to undergo a medical examination which proved Pinky a female. Taking exception to the bad portrayal of their daughter, her parents and relatives demanded that her husband Ananta Nayak (30) of Dimirijhari be arrested.

Barsharani had married Ananta, son of Alekh Nayak of Dimirijhari March 10. Barsharani’s family had given Rs 30,000 besides other items to the groom at the time of the marriage as per the demand of her in-laws.

However, Alekh called Barsharani’s parents over phone March 13 evening and demanded Rs 1 lakh and a motorcycle as dowry. He asked them to take back their daughter if they fail to arrange the money.

As Barsharani’s mother Pramila sought a discussion to settle the issue, Alekh threatened them of dire consequences.

Barsharani called her mother over phone during that night and asked them to meet the demand failing which she feared her husband and in-laws would kill her.

When her parents reached her in-law’s house next morning, Barsharani was unconscious and unable to speak.

A meeting was called in the village, where Ananta reiterated that Barsharani was a male. All the efforts of the villagers to resolve the issue turned futile. It was decided that Barsharani should undergo a medical examination.

Her in-laws brought Barsharani to a hospital without informing her parents Wednesday. When her parents came to know about the matter, they visited the hospital. An altercation erupted between the two and her parents were not allowed to meet her.

Finding no other option, Barsharani’s parents apprised the Nayagarh Town police, who rescued Barsharani. At police station also, Ananta maintained that Barsharani was a male.

Town police later sent Barsharani to the hospital for a medical examination which confirmed her to be female.

The girl’s family lodged a complaint with Nuagaon police mentioning that her in-laws played a drama to humiliate them as they failed to get dowry as per their demand. They demanded immediate arrest of Ananata and his family members.

However, police have not registered a case in this regard yet.

Nuagaon officer-in-charge Samita Mishra said investigation into the matter was on. Measures would be taken against the guilty after the probe is over. PNN
