Drunken DHH doc misbehaves with patient

Malkangiri: Tension mounted Friday night at the district headquarters hospital here after a doctor allegedly misbehaved with a patient in a drunken state.

On being informed, additional district medical officer (ADMO) Dr Shashi Bhusan Mohapatra along with other doctors and the police reached the spot and brought the situation under control, it was learnt.

The ADMO is said to have asked the doctor to leave the hospital and go home.

According to reports, Dr Srimayi Mishra, an in-charge physician of outpatient department (OPD) of the hospital, came late in the night in an inebriated condition.

Meanwhile, the condition of Sabitri Tangul, a patient of nearby Pandripani village who was undergoing treatment, suddenly deteriorated and she needed immediate blood transfusion. One of her relatives approached Dr Mishra with the required application form to get blood. However, the physician sudden got angry and abused the patients and her relative under the influence of alcohol. The matter triggered resentment among other attendants of the patients. They confronted Mishra over his consumption of liquor which the former denied. However, he admitted that he drinks occasionally, it was learnt.

Since the situation was going beyond control, the top officials of the hospital were apprised of the development. The ADMO and the police official pacified the angry people.

“The doctors working in tribal pockets are given additional incentives by the government. But they are turning up at the work place in drunken state which speaks volume of the quality of patient service offered at the government hospitals,” said Ram Prasad Patnaik, a lawyer of the town.

“The administration should view the matter seriously and initiate action against the tainted physician,” he demanded.

Chief District Medical Officer Dr Amarendra Mohanty said he was aware of the melee. Action would be taken against the guilty following a probe, the CDMO assured. PNN
