e-book fraud: Ex-captain of Navy held for cheating

Bhubaneswar, June 9: A former captain of Indian Navy, Narsingh Prasad Patnaik, was Friday arrested for allegedly duping people of more than Rs 100 crore here.

The accused was the marketing promoter of APS solutions which had cheated more than 200 people in Orissa.

APS solutions started its operations in the city in June 2016. “Officials of the company claimed that they make e-books and provided assignments to a few people. They suggested that each page of the book is scanned and put under a folder. After the work, the data is to be given to the company,” said complainant Falgun Mohanty.

The company was taking security deposits from the people who are doing the work. “I have paid Rs 10 lakh as security deposit for 2 lakh pages. They were paying Rs 5 per page. I started working there in April end. Instead of 2 lakh pages they give me 60,000. I started working on that. After the work, when I went to office to submit, I found the office was closed. I was told police had arrested one person,” said Akash Padhi.

Police officials said the company was making payments to the workers on a monthly basis. But they stopped payment from February and fled the scene with the deposits.

Victims alleged the company was doing the same work in a dozen states.

“We are suspecting involvement of five to six people in the case. We are investigating and nab the other accused,” claimed SK Behera, additional IIC of Capital police station. PNN
