Bhubaneswar: The East Coast Railway (ECoR) has achieved a major engineering breakthrough with the successful excavation of the 829-metre Tunnel No. 41-41A between Borra Guhalu and Karakavalasa stations in Rayagada Division, marking a significant milestone in the ongoing Kottavalasa-Koraput Doubling Project.
The breakthrough was achieved October 1 in the Borra Guhalu-Karakavalasa block section with 100 per cent accuracy in alignment, reflecting the precision and engineering expertise deployed in executing the railway project through challenging terrain.
Tunnel No. 41-41A has a total length of 829 metres and has been constructed in a horseshoe shape along an alignment extending up to an eight-degree curve. The successful breakthrough is considered an important advancement in the execution of the Kottavalasa-Koraput Doubling Project, which involves construction of additional railway infrastructure in the difficult terrain of the region.
The completion of the tunnel breakthrough will facilitate further progress in the doubling work and strengthen rail connectivity and infrastructure along the Kottavalasa-Koraput section. On completion, the doubling project is expected to enhance line capacity, improve operational efficiency and facilitate smoother movement of both freight and passenger trains in the region. The project is also aimed at strengthening the railway network in the strategically important Kottavalasa-Koraput corridor and improving the overall efficiency of train operations in the section.
