Cuttack: Taking serious note of a host of alleged irregularities committed by SUM Hospital that led to the death of several persons in a blaze October 17, the Special Investigation Team (SIT) set up by the Supreme Court to probe black money in the country has directed the Enforcement Directorate (ED) to probe all financial dealings of the hospital.
Justice Arijit Pasayat, vice-chairman of the SIT, has directed the ED to look into all the financial transactions of the hospital.
Justice Pasayat has also directed the Director General of Police (DGP) KB Singh to extend all support to ED in its investigation of the hospital’s financial affairs.
SIT sources said Justice Pasayat has asked ED to find out whether black money has been utilised in SUM Hospital or not. Earlier, the apex court-appointed panel has collected evidence regarding the investment of black money in some private educational institutions in the state.
Sources said the SIT, which had earlier sought the help of Orissa Police, state Crime Branch, Vigilance department and other law enforcement agencies to unearth black money utilised in mining and real estate sectors, has decided to go for an ED probe into the financial irregularities at the private hospital in the wake of the fire tragedy.
The fire tragedy had claimed close to two dozen lives. While various hospitals where the injured were admitted Monday night put the combined toll at 23, official sources put it at 21 with one more death Wednesday.
