Nuapada: Poverty and backwardness go hand in hand making lives of tribals miserable in Khaliabhata village under Kirkita panchayat, 15 km from Kharial town in Nuapada district, reports said.
People here live in pathetic condition with no basic facilities like roads, healthcare, power supply and drinking water. Till date, there is no scope of primary education for children in this village.
Even as the government pumps in crores of rupees and launches scheme after scheme for the uplift of the tribals, it couldn’t help much for their socio-economic development. Even after 71 years of Independence, the village is crying for basic facilities.
The rural households are deprived of drinking water and education facilities while the people here continue to languish in darkness. In the name of road, the villagers have only a mountain terrain road which makes tough for them to commute during rain.
More than 200 people of 80 families dwell in the village. People here are illiterate while they have no source of income except for working as migrant workers. Even as there are more than 30 children in the age group of 4-12, lack of a primary school has barred them from education.
Besides, with no basic amenities, people are forced to follow the barter system- where they bring rice in exchange of dal and other oil-based crops from others.
The woes of these people don’t end here. They have only one well as source of water.
Electricity is a distant dream for them as sun and moon are the only sources of light for them. Though electric poles and transformers have been installed, electricity is yet to be supplied to these people.
”We have been requesting the administration and people’s representatives. But, nothing has helped us. We fear our children will continue to live a cursed life,” sarpanch Hemabati Das said. Villagers urged the administration to take notice of their plight.
