Raurkela: An elderly couple was killed after a mud wall of their house collapsed on them while they were sleeping in Ranto Birkera panchayat under Brahmanitarang police station in Sundargarh district Friday, police said. The deceased were identified as Tenga Kispatta, 70, and his wife Mahi Kispatta, 60.
According to the police, the couple was asleep inside their house when the wall collapsed on them in the early hours of Friday. They were trapped under the debris. Police reached the spot and rescued the couple before taking them to the Raurkela Government Hospital. Doctors declared both of them dead on arrival, officials said.
Police registered two cases in connection with the deaths. The bodies were sent for post-mortem examination and were later handed over to the family members in the afternoon, police said. The incident comes amid concerns over the safety of mud houses during the monsoon season, when prolonged rainfall can weaken earthen structures. Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the wall collapse. Heavy rains over the last two months across the state have led to flooding in several districts, affecting the lives and livelihoods of lakhs of people.
