Angul: In a heinous crime, an elderly man was beaten to death by his relatives over a land dispute at Kukudang village near Sadar in this district Saturday.
The deceased was identified as Uchab Behera while the accused were his relatives Pandit Behera and his two sons.
According to villagers, there was a land dispute between the families of Uchab and his cousin Pandit. Things took an ugly turn after the two broke out in an altercation over the same issue Friday evening.
In a fit of rage, Pandit along with two of his sons attacked Uchab. The three tied him to a pole in the village street and beat him up. The three fled after the elderly man lost his consciousness.
After getting information, family members of Uchab rescued and rushed him to Angul district hospital. However, he succumbed to the injuries while undergoing treatment.
Police registered a case based on a complaint by the deceased’s wife and launched a probe. Acting on a tip-off, the police arrested Pandit and his two sons while they were taking shelter in a forest near the village.
