Rourkela: An elephant calf died after falling into a ditch near Mahipani under Bisra forest range in Sundargarh district late Wednesday night.
Forest department’s investigation has revealed that calf is approximately one year old.
Sources said, a herd of elephants sneaked into Mahipani village Wednesday night. The forest department had taken steps to drive the herd away from the village. The calf might have fallen into the ditch during the operation.
The forest department rescued the carcass from the ditch Thursday morning.
