Nuagaon: Six days after a man was killed in an elephant attack in Nuagaon block of Sundargarh district, another man was trampled to death by a jumbo at Lalikhamam village under the same block Wednesday morning.
The deceased was identified as Chhari Kujur (50). As per reports, a herd of elephants had strayed into the village Tuesday night in search of food. Kujur had been to relive himself when he noticed a team of forest guards driving away the animals into a nearby forest. He joined the team in the effort.
All of a sudden, an elephant chased Kujur and trampled him to death. The incident triggered tension in the village. Irate locals staged an agitation demanding adequate compensation to the bereaved family.
Police sent the body for post-mortem and registered a case of unnatural death.
“Four persons have been killed in elephant attacks in the area in the last three months. If the negligence of the forest department continues, many more lives will be claimed,” the agitators said. They relented after forest officials assured the bereaved gamily of compensation as per government norms.
Siba Charan Kumbhar of Lankei village was killed by an elephant in a similar manner January 26. PNN
