Engineering student consumes poison after girlfriend refused to repay money, dies

Cuttack: An engineering student consumed poison after his girlfriend allegedly refused to repay the money that she had borrowed from him for her father’s treatment. He breathed his last while undergoing treatment at a private health facility in Cuttack, late Friday night.

The deceased was identified as Sritam Kumar Swain, a B.Tech third year student. Sritam hailed from Paradip town of Jagatsinghpur but stayed in Cuttack.

According to sources, Sritam had lent Rs 2 lakh to his girlfriend when her father was sick and admitted to a hospital. Recently, the youth asked his girlfriend to return the money, following which the relationship between the couple strained.

Furthermore, the girlfriend’s elder sibling allegedly physically assaulted Sritam. He was even threatened with dire consequences if he dared to ask the money back.

Under tremendous stress over the issue, Sritam decided to take an ultimate step and end his life. He booked a hotel room in Badambadi locality of the city October 6, where he consumed the poison.

On being informed, Mangalabag police have registered a case in this connection and launched a probe which is underway. The body of the youth was handed over to his family following a post-mortem.
