Bhubaneswar: An engineering student was Sunday arrested on the charge of raping a minor girl here while holding out the promise to marry her.
The accused identified as Pratuysh Nag is a resident of Luisingha in Bolangir. Nag, who is studying BTech in a private engineering college, was staying at Patrapada area under Khandagiri police station limits here.
The girl along with her family has been staying in a room of the same rented house as Nag in Patrapada. Nag maintained physical relationship with the victim on the pretext of marrying her after she attained adulthood. He allegedly told her not to reveal their relationship to her parents. However, the family later came to know about it after the girl became pregnant.
Recently, Nag left for his village telling the victim that his father had sustained severe injuries in a road mishap. Later, whenever the victim tried to contact with Nag over phone, he did not respond. The girl’s family had even told Nag’s mother about her son’s relationship with their daughter. Later, she also stopped responding to their calls.
The family of the girl lodged a written complaint with the Mahila Police station. Police registered a case (74/18) under sections 376 of IPC and section 6 of the POCSO Act. Nag was arrested Sunday from his village by police. The accused was sent to judicial custody after being produced before the court.
