Hindol: A youth was shot dead by an ex-serviceman at Thokar village under this block in Dhenkanal district Friday. The deceased was identified as Sanjib Majhi (25).
The incident is said to be the fallout of past enmity between the victim and the accused. Police rushed to the village and seized the body. An investigation was launched into the incident. However the accused absconded after perpetrating the crime.
According to police, Ganeswar Samal, an ex-serviceman, had to quit the job about one and half years ago after it was known that he had got the job on the basis of forged certificates.
Later, Samal joined as a security guard at Lanco Babandh at Odapada.
He suspected that it was Majhi who was responsible for exposing his forged certificates, for which he had to quit the job for fear of action from the Army.
Since then, there was bitter enmity between Samal and Majhi with the former on the lookout for an opportunity to eliminate the latter.
As ill luck would have it, Majhi was at the village community hall along with his father Sarangdhar at about 9 am Friday. Samal branding a gun rushed to the spot. On seeing him in such a state, Majhi stormed into the nearby house of Kambudhar Majhi. Samal followed him and fired threes at him, leaving him dead on the spot before vanishing from the scene.
Sarangdhar lodged a complaint with Balimi police against Samal. Police registered a case of murder and conducted the post-mortem of the body.
Police are in hot pursuit of Samal. PNN
