Explosion in market leaves 1 dead, 6 hurt

Nayagarh: One person, suspected to be carrying explosive material, was killed and six others were injured in an accidental explosion near a medicine shop in a market at Daspalla in this district Monday.

The deceased was identified as Kanhu Nayak (45) of Paibadi village. Police suspect that the deceased was carrying explosives which exploded near the medicine shop killing him on the spot.

The shop was devastated while a motorbike parked nearby was reduced to ashes. The market was closed Sunday otherwise the damage could have been more.

The injured were identified as Makund Nayak (38) of Baradi, his wife Abanti Nayak (32), medicine shopkeeper Sanjay Sahu (42), his employee Ajit Dash (22), Rajesh Nayak and Golak Nayak of Gadibida. The injured were admitted to Daspalla hospital. Makund and his wife were shifted to the district headquarters hospital as their condition worsened.

Sanjay said three youths had come to his store to buy medicines. After a while, a sudden explosion occurred. Meanwhile, the locals noticed two youths fleeing the scene of a motorbike.

IIC Chakraborty Kanhar began a probe into the matter. Nayagarh superintendent of police  Manoranjan Mohanty also reached the spot. “It was not a bomb attack but an accidental explosion,” said the SP.

“Investigation is on and we will arrest those involved in the incident,” he added.   PNN
