Bhubaneswar: Doing a school project in addition to daily ordeal of home works can be hectic for a child. Several project-making firms have come up to help the students in the city recently. One can find such shops at Bapujinagar, Chandrasekharpur, Jaydev Vihar and Unit IX areas.
Orissa POST interacts with a few project-facilitators and students who have taken up such projects. Pravat Satpathy and his friend Samarenda Sahoo, both graduates in electronics, set up a shop in 2011 at Bapuji Nagar here to help school students prepare innovative projects.
The cost of materials for projects range anywhere between Rs 1,000 and Rs 5,000, they said. Another assistance firm in Bapujinagar that helps students from Class I to Class X is run by Raghu who takes two to three days
to complete a project. There are two varieties of projects – static and live. Static projects are simple but the live projects are complex which require demonstration of how a train runs or how the lights flash. Baijayanti Sahoo, a science teacher in a government school, admitted that
she has very limited knowledge about science projects.
She said, “I recommend parents and students to visit such shops where they teach students how to complete a project successfully. Often, during science exhibitions students take the help of these professionals. It does help you to know how to build your own project minus hassles.’’ Anuj Kumar Mohanty, who was an electronics student, operates a workshop at Unit IX. He believes that school projects are interesting. “We teach students how to build a science project. For raw materials we have to depend on various shops in Bhubaneswar or in Kolkata. Nowadays every school needs a science project, so we are back in business like anything.” From circuit boards to fire alarms, science project shops are working on robotics, drones and like and apparently, school project facilitators are here to stay.
