Bhubaneswar: A man posing as a doctor was arrested by the City Commissionerate Police for allegedly duping his 14 wives huge sums of money. The accused has been identified as Ramesh Chandra Swain (54) of Bhagabanpur in Kendrapara district.
At a press conference Monday in Bhubaneswar, DCP Umashankar Dash explained that the accused, a father of five children, had married his first wife in 1982 and his second wife in 2002. Between 2002 and 2020, he met and married other women through matrimonial websites.
According to the official, he used to target middle-aged women looking for companionship and acquire their money before abandoning them.
Lawyers, doctors and highly-educated women are among the victims. The accused introduced himself as a doctor to establish his credibility.
A case has been registered against him at the Mahila police station under Sections 498 (A), 419, 468, 471 and 494 of the IPC.
According to police sources, a school teacher from filed a complaint with the Mahila police in July 2021, alleging that the accused married her in New Delhi in 2018 and then brought her to the state capital. She became aware of his multiple marriages and sought the assistance of the police.
On the basis of the complaint, police arrested Swain from a rented house in the city’s Khandagiri locality.
During investigation, it was revealed that Swain had married a woman official of the Punjab Central Armed Police Forces and had taken Rs 10 lakh from her.
The accused will be forwarded to court while police will seek his remand for further probe.
