Fake Maoist held in Rayagada

Rayagada: Police Monday arrested a youth on the charge of threatening locals and extorting money from them impersonating a Maoist.

The accused was identified as Kailashchandra Mohanty (23) of Gautam Nagar here.

According to police, Mohanty demanded Rs 5 lakh each from Baratam Bharaprasad Rao of Bidyanagar, KSR Rameswar Rao of Saipriya Nagar and Jami Venugopal of New Colony by threatening them over telephone. The trio lodged complaints with police and three separate cases were registered in this connection. Police managed to arrest the accused by tracking the incoming calls on the mobile phones of the complainants.

Police seized the handset and the SIM card used by Mohanty and produced him in a court Monday. 

“People without getting scared should approach the police if they receive such fake calls so that the wrongdoers can be brought to book,” sub-divisional police officer Y Jagannath Rao and IIC Rabindra Kumar Patra told the media.   PNN
