Sambalpur: A farmer committed suicide by consuming poison at Khairamal village under Jujumura police limit in this district Wednesday. The deceased has been identified as Abhadhut Pradhan (50) of the same locality.
Prima facie it appeared that the farmer ended his life over loans and bad crops, police said.
According to family members, Abadhuta owns approximately eight hectares of land. He had taken a loan of Rs 2,00,000 from the village money-lender for the cultivation of the land. However, lack of rainfall and irrigation facilities resulted in the production of bad crops, something he could not sell. Unable to repay the loan, Abhadhut took the extreme step.
Family members finding him unconscious initially rushed him to Veer Surendra Sai Institute of Medical Science and Research (VIMSAR), Burla. Later, he was shifted to a private hospital as there was no ICU ward available for Abadhuta at VIMSAR. But he breathed his last while undergoing treatment.
Initially, the hospital refused to release the body of Abadhuta as his family members were not able to pay the bill of Rs 74,000. Tension prevailed at the hospital due to this development.
However, hospital authorities released the body after former BJD district secretary Pramod Rath intervened. He persuaded Abadhuta’s family to sign a document by which they agreed to pay off the pending amount in installments.
