Farmer ends life due to ‘crop loss, debt burden’

Sonepur: A 25-year-old farmer, Mohan Kalata of Chulimal village under Binika block in Sonepur district, committed suicide by consuming pesticide reportedly due to crop loss.

During the last kharif season, Mohan had cultivated crops in around five acres after taking loans from some local moneylenders. However, he had to suffer crop loss due to pest attack on his cultivation. Unable to repay the loans, he was under mental stress which drove him to suicide, claimed his family members.

“He had to suffer crop loss due to pest attack. He could not repay the loan and so, he took the extreme step. He was my only son and the sole breadwinner of the family,” said Mohan’s father, Gajapati Kalata.

However, Binika tehsildar Alekh Ghuta  rejected the claim of Gajapati that Mohan had committed suicide due to crop loss.

Mohan had married newly and might have committed suicide due to some family issues, he said.
