Banta: Traffic came to a standstill on Bhadrak-Anandapur main road after hundreds of farmers staged a road blockade demanding proper drainage system here in Bhadrak district Monday.
Farmers from Bagda Kashipur, Taradipal, Hatadahi, Kantia, Icchapur and Chayalsingh panchayat participated in the demonstration.
According to sources, drains were dug on both sides of Bhadrak-Anandapur main road for the drainage of rainwater to farmlands. However, the drains have been filled with waste preventing seepage of rainwater to the farmlands. The waste is also creating a foul smell and leading to contagious diseases, farmers alleged.
Meanwhile, the rainwater remains stagnant causing severe problems on the main road, the agitating farmers alleged. Famers of the panchayats tried to bring the matter to the notice of the administration several times but in vain. Officials turned deaf ears even after several complaints in this regard.
Availing no response, farmers staged the demonstration that started Monday morning and continued till noon, sources said. The farmers shouted slogans and condemned the negligence of the administration. They warned of continuing the demonstration if no measures was taken.
They demanded the cleaning of the drains at regular intervals and sought that officials ensure proper flow of rainwater to the farmlands. On learning of the incident, local tehsildar Mahesh Chowdary reached the spot and brought the situation under control.
The agitators called off the agitation after Chowdary assured of tackling the problem within five days. The villagers warned of a mass demonstration if the problem was not solved within five days. PNN
