Fire victims take shelter on pond mound, seek rehab

Daspalla: Six families were rendered homeless in a major fire at Shrirampur in Nachhipur panchayat in Nayagarh district three days back, but no succour from the district administration has reached the victims who are forced to take shelter near a pond under the open sky.

Even as their relatives helped them with food, the families had to dwell on a ground near the village pond. Despite repeated pleas, no help from the block administration has arrived their way, forcing them to spend their nights under the open sky.

The family members are sleeping on the pond ground at night and surviving on whatever their neighbours provide them out of sympathy.

The victims have been left with nothing except what has been provided by NGOs, neighbours, friends and relatives out of compassion.

The family members alleged Revenue department officials, political leaders and MLA had promised them all possible help during their visit to the spot. “As days passed by, they forgot their promises,” they alleged.

Locals urged the administration to take immediate measures to rehabilitate the affected families and provide them aid under housing schemes.
