post news network, Bhubaneswar, May 9: Around five brave hearts of the country have been nominated for the ‘Women Peacemaker Award-2015’ to be given in a function slated to be held on the International Mother’s Day May 10. The awards to be given by the Maa Ghara Foundation Trust, will honour the role these women played in their fight against social menaces threatening the well being of women last year.
The organisers are buoyed by the response the event has garnered. “We have got overwhelming response from the people from across the country. The award was open to all and we received many registrations online. Meanwhile, we urged many deserving ladies to file their nominations. Ultimately, we have made the final list and a jury will finally select the winner out of the best five,” said Rituparna Mohanty, a representative of the trust.
The organisers have picked five prominent women from the country for their outstanding contribution to the society and for their courage to fight several social menaces.
The top five nominees include, social activist Irom Sharmila from Manipur for her uninterrupted fight against a controversial law, Sindu Tai from Maharashtra for her contribution to the service of the orphanages, Dayamani Barla from Jharkhand for her fight to ensure the rights of the tribal people, Sruti Mohapatra for her contributions to the welfare of the physically handicapped in Orissa and Sampat Pal from Uttar Pradesh for her fight against social evils with her ‘Gulaabi Gang’.
The organisers said that among the nominees, Sampat Pal and Dayamani Barla were expected to join the deliberations scheduled to be held on the occasion of the World Mother’s Day at Hotel Presidency in the city. On Wednesday, a panel of jury comprising retired judge, journalist, social activists and others were shown clippings of the contributions of the women, selected for the awards, in their field.
The jury members gave their confidential markings to the organisers; those would be revealed on the May 10. The award will be given to the winner on the day along with certificates. An award of Rs 50,000 has been planned for the winner.
