Former minister Raghunath Mohanty quits BJD

Bhubaneswar: Senior BJD leader Raghunath Mohanty resigned from the party Sunday. In a letter addressed to the party supremo Naveen Patnaik, the former minister said that he is quitting the party for personal reasons.

Considered to be an aspirant for the Assembly seat, Mohanty’s decision has surprised many. However, sources indicated that on becoming aware that the BJD may nominate someone else from the seat, Mohanty decided to leave the party.

It should be stated here that Mohanty had earlier resigned Saturday from the post of chairman of the Odisha Lift Irrigation Corporation (OLIC).

Rumours were rife then that he would be nominated as the BJD candidate from Basta. Mohanty however, had refused to comment on the issue. He said that he resigned from OLIC due to personal reasons. When he was asked whether he would be contesting from the Basta seat, he had said that the decision regarding this will be taken by Patnaik.
