Former MP Balgopal Mishra, son and supporters detained for hurling eggs on CM’s carcade

Bolangir: Taking swift action, the Town police Tuesday morning detained former MP Balgopal Mishra, his son and supporters in connection with the hurling of eggs at Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik’s carcade during a road show in Bolangir district last evening.

Tension gripped the area following the arrest. Supporters of Mishra created uproar in the area and raised anti-slogans against the Chief Minister. A police platoon was deployed to maintain law and order and avoid any kind of untoward situation.

Tension continued in the region till the filing of this report.

Eggs were hurled and black flags were shown when Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik was participating in a road show at Salebhata under Agalpur block in Bolangir district Monday evening.

However, the eggs failed to hit the Chief Minister’s vehicle but touched the other vehicles in his cavalcade. Tension prevailed as the demonstrators hurled eggs and pelted stones on the BJD supporters and all shops remaining closed in protest as police had to lathicharge to disperse the mob.

The Chief Minister’s special bus later left for Dunguripali after the incident.

The demonstrator were allegedly protesting over not fielding a local as the BJD candidate from Loisingha Assembly seat but fielding an outsider from Bolangir as the party candidate.

When contacted, SP K Siba Subramani said the demonstrator after failing to hurl eggs on the Chief Minister’s vehicle got enraged and pelted stones at the police and commuters on the road. Five vehicles including a police had been partially damaged in the incident.

Police then resorted to mild lathicharge at the spot and later detained Mishra along with his son and supporters.
