Bhubaneswar: In a bid to encourage the adventure sports in the state, Orissa Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik laid the foundation stone of the Sports Climbing Complex at the Kalinga Stadium here Wednesday. Among others present at the ceremony were sports minister Sudam Marndi, Bhubaneswar MP Prasanna Patsani, Bhubaneswar Central MLA Bijaya Kumar Mohanty and Bhubaneswar North MLA Priyadarshi Mishra.
This complex will be the first of its kind in India confirming to the norms of International Federation of Sports Climbing. “Sports climbing is going to be a demonstration discipline in 2020 Olympics at Tokyo. So, it will be of immense help for our sports talents,” Patnaik stated in his speech.
“The Government of Orissa assigns high importance for promotion of sports activities and development of sports infrastructure in the state,” he added.
The world class facility will be constructed at a cost of `3.70 crore. The plan and design of the entire structure has been approved by IIT, Bhubaneswar.
“The sports climbing complex having lead, speed and bouldering facilities will give impetus to this new sport in the state and provide proper training facility to our players for participating in national and international sports. I am hoping they use the facility properly,” Patnaik concluded.
