Bhubaneswar, Sept 18: Students who want to know more about the basics of mathematics can now visit the newly-renovated mathematics gallery at Regional Science Centre inaugurated on the occasion of the 26th foundation day of the centre here Friday.
Around 30 new mathematical exhibits have been added to the gallery like the children’s corner, algebraic identities, playing geometry, algebraic series which includes arithmetic progression and geometric progression, mensuration and probability.
Attending the inauguration programme CJ Venugopal, principal secretary of department of the science and technology, said, “We need to generate interest among students in mathematics by giving them practical knowledge and not just dry theory. We are planning to come up with more innovative programmes.”
Speaking to Orissa POST, Archana Khosla, director of RSC, said, “We have completely changed the mathematics gallery which was inaugurated in 2010. Earlier, the gallery was up to the secondary level but now we have upgraded the gallery to the higher secondary level.”
While for senior students there is musical maths, golden ratio, trigonometric functions and probability, for juniors there are multiplication, Pythagoras theorem, maths illusion and the play with polygons sections.
“We decided to upgrade the gallery as many teachers and students wanted new things to be added. We want students to learn things not solely based on theory but also on practical knowledge. Some students don’t like mathematics. This is a means of generating interest in students. We have removed the Ramanujan hall as nobody used to go there,” she added.
Speaking about future plans of the centre, Khosla said, “We have decided to start mirror magic gallery which we hope will be a major attraction among students. The work is going on and there is probability of opening it by next year.”
Many students from different schools attended the opening day and were very excited about the gallery.
