Gangpur eves rout Karnataka

Bhubaneswar: Hockey Gangpur entered the VIIIth Sub-Junior Women’s National Division A Hockey Championships beating Hockey Karnataka 4-0 in the last league match of the Group C in Haryana, Monday. The Orissa-based team topped their group winning all their matches to advance into the next round.

The Gangpur eves rode on a brace by Manisha Oram to dominate the match completely from the start. They did not give any space to the Karnataka players to operate. The Gangpur girls operated like a well-oiled machine and repeatedly broke open the rival defence at will.

Anjela Toppo got Hockey Gangpur up and moving with a sixth minute strike after a combined move down the middle. They had the opportunity to increase the lead, but waywardness in front of the opposition goal prevented them from establishing their supremacy.

After the change of ends, the Gangpur eves upped the ante and scored three more goals. Aten Topno doubled the lead in the 52nd minute with a rasping drive from the top of the ‘D’. Then Manisha struck twice in quick succession in the 59th and 69th minutes respectively to complete the rout.

In between the two goals scored by Manisha, strikers Aten and Anjela got a couple of opportunities each, but shot wide.
