Rourkela/Vedvyas: Police Tuesday arrested five fishermen in connection with the gangrape of a woman picnicker at Pitamahal Dam near Kalunga on the outskirt of Rourkela Wednesday.
The accused were identified as Suresh Dungdung (40) of Balanda Colony, Kalia Oram (25) of Balanda Chutiatola and Biranchi Majhi (25), Santosh Sethi (21) and Prakash Lakra(20) of Juna Balanda.
Police also seized two mobile handsets and `2,000 from the accused, all of whom were sent to jail following their medical examinations.
According to reports, a bike-borne couple of Biramitrapur, on their way to Pitamahal Dam, came across the group of accused near the picnic site. The duo wanted to know from them about the availability of fish near the dam. Guided by the five, the couple was waiting for some fishermen to buy fish near a culvert. Meanwhile, the accused arrived at the site and forcibly took the couple to a nearby forest. While three of them overpowered the husband, the others two took turns on the wife. The husband remained a mute spectator to the crime as he was threatened by the accused with life. Later, the five decamped with their mobile phones and cash.
Shocked and shamed, the couple didn’t inform anyone and returned home. However, they lodged a complaint with Brahmanitarang police the next day.
Police conducted medical examination of the victim at a government hospital and registered a case. PNN
