Gangster Shakeel, two aides brought to city

Cuttack: The Commissionerate Police Monday brought gangster Mohammad Shakeel and his two associates—Wasim Akram and Sheikh Sona—to the city from Andhra Pradesh.
The CP arrested the trio Saturday from Karempudi police limits in the neighbouring state with the help of local police. A gun and two live bullets were seized from them.
Sources said Shakeel’s aide Sona had executed a robbery in Markatnagar police limits here and fled to Andhra Pradesh. Shakeel was also involved in various criminal activities before fleeing to the neighbouring state.
Shakeel kept changing his locations and visited four states in the last three months. He stayed in Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, Bihar and Andhra Pradesh along with his associates in rented accommodations and expanded his criminal network there. Although police had earlier visited the four states, they had to return empty-handed.
“Shakeel has 22 cases pending against him at various police stations in the city. He was a key member of Tito gang, but subsequently left the gang and formed his own and indulged in various criminal activities. Recently, we learnt that he was living with his sister in Andhra Pradesh and working at a hotel and tracked his cell phone location and nabbed him,” DCP Sanjeev Arora said at a press conference here Monday.
Earlier, Shakeel and his associates had hurled a bomb at the house of Mohammad Sajaan, the head of Kesharpur Sahi, March 24. In another incident, the gangster and his accomplices opened fire at a trader, Sayed Jalil, at VIP Zone of Cantonment Road March 27.
Arora said Manglabag police and a special squad had an encounter with Shakeel and Sheikh Babu near Mahanadi April 17. While Shakeel managed to give the police a slip, Babu was injured in the firing.
Although three members of Shakeel’s gang were arrested, he was at large.
