Berhampur, March 20: While the state is reeling under increasing temperatures in mid-March, Ganjam district administration has taken a slew of measures to handle sunstroke cases.
A control room has been set up on the premises of the office of the chief district medical officer (CDMO). The control room is keeping a track on the heat-wave condition in the district and cases of sunstrokes, additional chief district medical officer (ADMO, Public Health) Pitambar Dash said Friday. Dash added the Gaon Kalyan Samitis have been asked to open water kiosks in their respective areas. That apart, awareness programmes have been undertaken to prevent sunstroke cases and health workers have been provided training on how to deal with sunstroke cases.
The district headquarters hospital, sub-divisional hospitals, primary and community health centres (PHCs and CHCs) have been directed to generate awareness among people on sunstroke, Dash said. “Sub-divisional hospitals and health sub-centres were asked to ensure that there are water kiosks on their premises and that people and visitors get water in hospitals easily,” he said.
There are 118 PHCs and CHCs and and two sub-divisional hospitals apart from the district headquarters hospital in the district. All these hospitals have been directed to open special wards to provide better treatment to sunstroke patients. The wards with cooler or air conditioning facility will have sufficient beds, ORS packets, ice, saline, oxygen cylinders and required stock of medicines. The facilities will be provided till June 15. If the heat wave condition continues after that, measures would be taken to continue the facilities further, Dash said.
Meanwhile, sunstroke wards have been erected at district headquarters hospital and the City Hospital. Dash added that in case any death due to sunstroke is reported, a joint probe will be conducted by the nearest medical officer and the tehsildar and the report of
investigations will be sent to the state health department.
