Ganjam farmer commits suicide due to crop loss

Jagannathprasad: A farmer at Patadhar village under Jagannathprasad block in Ganjam district committed suicide over alleged crop loss Monday.

The deceased was identified as Maheshwar Swain in the village. Jagannathprasad police handed over the body to his family members after post-mortem and registered a case over a complaint by his relatives. Family members alleged that Swain ended his life over crop loss.

On being informed, a team of police and revenue officials led by tehsildar Basudev Pandey met the bereaved family members at their village and took stock of the incident. Preliminary inquiries however, failed to establish whether the death was due to crop loss or some other reason.

According to sources, Swain was a share-cropper with very little farmland of his own. When contacted, IIC Yuvaraj Swain said a probe is underway to unravel the actual reason behind the death of the farmer.
