Girl swept away in Mahanadi rescued

Badamba, August 30: A 16-year-old girl here in Cuttack district displayed exemplary bravery and swam for one and a half hours in the strong currents of river Mahanadi before being rescued by fire brigade personnel Sunday.

She was identified as Sushama Khatua, daughter of Kamadev Khatua of Gamei.
The girl was admitted to Badamba hospital and discharged after doctors found her condition stable following primary treatment. After reports surfaced, hundreds of locals thronged the riverbank to see the girl.

The incident occurred when Sushama slipped into the water while bathing in the river near her village and was swept away in the strong currents.
Fire brigade personnel from Badamba and Balijhari launched a search operation in a power boat and rescued her from the river at a place in between Singhanath and Baideswar shrine.
