Bhubaneswar, March 14: Geetika Sharma, an engineering student of this city is keen to do something different in her life. During her childhood, she did not come across many successful women entrepreneurs. But she is determined to pursue her passion – to be a businesswoman – despite all odds. She, however, was a bit unsure about her success till Friday. Her fears were allayed only when she met some successful women entrepreneurs the next day.
“Since my childhood doing business, especially running a start-up business always fascinated me. I dreamt of living in a corporate world, but did not want to mingle with the workers. I, however, wanted to stand out. But never got encouragement to start a firm on my own and fight against the existing stereotype in the society. However, my fears and hesitations of starting my own business were allayed when I met some successful women entrepreneurs who asked us to pursue our passion without any second thoughts,” said Geetika Sharma, 3rd Year BTech, IT student from KIIT.
Geetika and many of her friends Saturday met some of the successful women entrepreneurs from the city who dared to dream a career in business. Abhivyakti Singh, another engineering student from the college hails from Chhattisgarh. She said, “We often hear news of sexual discrimination in various organisations. Although we are living in 21st century and the world around us has undergone many changes, many men still think that women cannot run business and thrive in the field. But many successful women have thrived in this sector. Now, hardly any sector is untouched by women. I actually believe women not only can do all types of jobs as men do but can do many things better than men.”
Many budding women professionals Saturday flocked to the panel discussion on the problems faced by women entrepreneurs, organised by KIIT on its campus. Several students took part in the discussion. Swosti Mishra, executive director of an entrepreneurship society said, “Even as a student, don’t wait to first get into the industry
and adjust according to the situation later. Try to inculcate habits of living in the corporate world from college itself. Never think a girl cannot do anything. Girls have in the past done marvelous things and can achieve anything in life. They have fared against all odds.”
Another women entrepreneur, Jayshree Mohanty, founder of an IT-based start-up said, “The time has come for the women in our country to break all the existing stereotypes and excel in life and pursue what they want to do in their life. Even the government is now coming up with several schemes for the women to start their own business. Be up-to-date on these initiatives and never compromise on your dreams and passions.”
