Google is apparently working on solutions to reduce vehicular emissions with the assistance of artificial intelligence and monitoring driving trends via Google Maps to optimise the placement of signal traffic. The ‘Green Light’ project aims to help in optimising the existing traffic light plans.
Google said that this optimisation takes less than five minutes for authorities to use this model, which can not only analyse traffic signals at single intersections but will coordinate with several adjacent intersections to create waves of green lights. This will reduce stop-and-go traffic and eventually lowering overall emissions of vehicles.
Indian cities like Bangalore, Hyderabad, and Kolkata have in fact implemented this Google model. As per Google, the initial numbers suggest that there has been 30% reduction in stops and nearly a 10% reduction in emissions at intersections via Green Light project.
Google also claims the project has been implemented across 12 cities worldwide, which will save fuel and lower emissions that will be adequate for almost 30 million monthly car rides.
The global search giant said that the AI-based model is applicable to any sort of intersection, including its structure, traffic patterns, signal scheduling, etc.
“Green Light is capable of analysing thousands of intersections simultaneously, improving the flow through multiple intersections in the city,” Google explained.
It further added, “Our AI-based recommendations work with existing infrastructure and traffic systems, and city engineers are able to monitor the impact and see results within weeks.”
As already mentioned, cities like Bangalore, Kolkata, and Hyderabad are already using the Green Light project, but it will be interesting to see when this model will implemented in other cities across the country.
