Berhampur, March 28: In yet another incident of medical negligence and exploitation of patients by doctors, a woman Saturday lost her life at a private clinic where she was referred to by a doctor of the city hospital here.
Tension prevailed on the premises of the Amar Clinic near the new bus-stand here after the death of 29-year-old Sabita Sahu, wife of Bijay Sahu of Radhakant Sahi of Old Berhampur.
Sabita was admitted to the city hospital March 18 after she felt sick. She was being treated by a doctor of obstetrics and gynaecology department of the city hospital. However, the doctor managed to persuade her husband Bijay that she can get better treatment at a comparatively low price at Amar Clinic.
Accordingly, Bijay admitted Sabita at Amar Clinic March 20. The doctor initially charged `10,000 for the treatment mentioning that there was a tumor in her abdomen. After surgery, he again charged another `10,000. The family had to cough up a total of `32,000 for the treatment in the clinic.
Sabita was attended by her parents at the clinic. Suddenly, Bijay was informed by the clinic staff that health condition of Sabita was critical Saturday morning. However, before the arrival of Bijay at the clinic, Sabita was shifted to MKCG Medical College and Hospital by an auto-rickshaw.
Bijay reached MKCG only to find that Sabita was declared dead just after her arrival in the hospital.
Later, Sabita’s family members and relatives crowded the clinic and staged a demonstration. They demanded that the doctor, who conducted the surgery, be called to the spot. The situation became so tense that police had to intervene to make the situation normal.
The family later lodged a complaint with the Baidyanathpur police station. The MKCG outpost police registered an unnatural death case after conducting a postmortem.
When contacted, additional district medical officer Dr Saroj Mishra said they have not received any written complaint on the issue. However, a probe would be conducted on the basis of the reports published in media.
He added that the clinic will be sealed if it is found guilty.
Baidyanathpur police station officer-in-charge Ajay Mishra said a complaint was lodged in this regard. A case will be registered and action would be taken after a probe is conducted.
