Govt quarters razed for new BMC complex

Bhubaneswar: A joint team of BMC and BDA started demolishing two government quarters of General Administration department 4R/3 and 4R/4 in Unit IX area opposite Satya Nagar crematorium.

This is the first step towards construction of a BMC building with the Intelligent City Operations and Management Centre (ICOMC) under Smart City plan, for which a total of four 4R quarters and eight 3R quarters will be demolished. The GA department had already given permission for the project May 30, 2018. Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) had applied for the land January 25, 2017.

Apart from the 12 quarters there was also a firewood godown of Odisha Forest Development Corporation (OFDC), which was supplying wood for people coming to use Satya Nagar crematorium. The state government has directed the BMC to accommodate the OFDC facility inside the crematorium ground itself so that people need not go outside for firewood.

Among others, GM Operations, Bhubaneswar Smart City Limited, Bijay Kumar Swain, Zonal Deputy Commissioner (South East) Binay Kumar Dash and senior engineers and officials of BMC and BSCL were present during the demolition drive Wednesday.

The 231,000 sq ft structure of BMC office and ICOMC will be developed on 4.04 acres. The Rs 70-crore building complex will have parking in basement, BMC office on lower and upper ground floor, ICOMC facility on first and second floor, cafeteria and landscaped area with terrace on the third floor and BMC offices on all the floors above the third one.
