Bhubaneswar: The Bhubaneswar meteorological centre Wednesday said that the low pressure over the Bay of Bengal has become a depression, and that it will trigger rains in south and coastal Orissa from Thursday night.
“The depression over southeast Bay of Bengal and neighbourhood moved north westwards and lay centred at about 1120 km to the southeast of Machillipatnam and 1200 km south-southeast of Gopalpur,” an IMD bulletin said.
The system is likely to move northwestwards and reach the Andhra Pradesh coast by Friday evening. It is likely to intensify into a deep depression in the next 48 hours, it said. However, there is a probability of the system slightly weakening when it reaches near the AP coast.
Rainfall is very likely at many places over north Andhra Pradesh and south Orissa from December 7 to 9. Isolated heavy rains are likely December 8 and 9.
“The weather during the day will be dry Thursday. Rainfall will start in south and coastal areas from Wednesday night and will continue till December 10,” said Bhubaneswar Met Centre Director Sarat Chandra Sahu.
Similarly, he said, north Orissa and interior pockets will witness heavy rains on December 11 and 12. The low pressure will dissipate after December 13, Sahu said.
Distant Cautionary Signal Number One (DC-I) has been hoisted at Paradeep and Gopalpur ports, he added.
Squally winds with speeds reaching 40-50 kmph gusting to 60 kmph is likely over and around Nicobar Islands in the next 24 hours.
