Patapur: After a brief gap, the ‘mysterious’ killer animal has surfaced again. A herd of 11 sheep was found dead at Sahaspur village under Sanakhemundi block in Ganjam district Saturday morning.
Reports said many more sheep, goats and cows were injured in the attack by the unidentified animal. The incident occurred late Friday night, but it became public after locals spotted the carcasses of the animals the next day. The ‘unknown’ animal had fed on the intestine of the sheep. The sheep belonged to farmer A Kureshu Patra.
On being informed, Digapahandi forest officers Paramanand Panigrahy and Mrutunjay Behera along with a forest department team reached the village and took stock of the situation. The carcasses were seized and sent for post-mortem to the local veterinary hospital.
The officials said they suspected that the sheep were attacked by hyenas. “We are probing into the deaths and necessary compensation will be provided to the farmer for the loss,” Panigrahy said.
