Hindutva is at stake: Puri seer

Bhograi: Shankaracharya of Puri Govardhana Peetha, Swami Nischalananda Saraswati, expressed concern over the growing strife all over the world.

Addressing a press meet here in Balasore district Sunday, the seer said that Hindutva of Hindus is at stake now.

His statements have a lot to do with the political scenario unfolding in neighbouring West Bengal.

The Shankaracharya was in South 24 Parganas district to have a holy dip in Sagardwip Gangasagar Sunday.

“Sanatana Dharma is the base of all religions of the world. This religion has no alternative. Outrage of irreligious people is on the rise across the globe. Morality, ethics, social and humanistic values have done a vanishing act in today’s society. And Hindutva is unprotected,” he observed, adding that at this juncture, some Sanatani seers and nationalists should come forward for its safety.

On the political scenario, the seer said politics in the country has become directionless.

“Leaders have eschewed their ‘rajdharma’, but adopted ‘adharma’, unscrupulous and self-centered means with the help of media mechanism to have their way in the country. This is not good for the country,” he noted.

On the contentious Ram Janmabhoomi issue, the Shankaracharya said, “The dispute at the place has become worse since the regime of former Prime Minister PV Narasimha Rao. The issue has not been sorted out till date. The sentiments of Hindus should take precedence over this matter. The government should take all religious outfits into account to sort the issue out.”

Replying to a question from our reporter on the Srimandir issue, the seer said anarchy still prevails in the temple. “There is a need to take views of scriptures, the administration, the leaders and devotees to resolve the temple issue. No dispute will arise if work is done with coordination with all stakeholders,” he said.

The seer also voiced deep concern over the growing pollution of rivers and seas. He added that all need to work together to make the seas free of pollution from Gangasagar to Puri.

He also suggested that the Central and state governments should declare Gangasagar as a holy confluence instead of a picnic spot while Makar Parba be declared Biswa Parba.
