Cuttack, May 16: Hockey Gangpur entered the semifinals of the Vth Sub-Junior National (Division-A) hockey championship with an emphatic 5-2 victory over Hockey Punjab in New Delhi, Friday. They will meet Hockey Haryana, Saturday for a place in the final.
However, it was Hockey Punjab who took the lead in the very first minute of the game through skipper Dilpreet Singh. Undaunted by the early reversal, Gangpur restored parity when Biraj Topno scored in the 10th minute. Five minutes later Albert Tete put Gangpur ahead converting a penalty corner.
Maintaining pressure, Gangpur continued to torment the opposition defence and added two more goals in the 18th and 32nd minute through Rahul Ekka and Prakash Dhir.
Hockey Punjab came out in an aggressive fashion in the second session and their efforts bore fruit when Varinder Singh converted a penalty corner to reduce the margin. However, their joy was shortlived as Tete once more established the three-goal advantage by converting a penalty corner in the 43rd minute.
